About Papua


West Papua Province

The country is Indonesia and the capital is Manokwari. The population is 741.841 people in first census in 2010. It’s divided into 10 regencies and 1 city, there are:

Fak-Fak Regency:
Population is 50.584 people. That had relations with the Sultanate of Ternate. The Japanese first detachment landed in Fakfak on April 1th, 1942. Fakfak has a small community of Muslim Arab and Indian Indonesians, descended from traders who came to Papua in the 19th century. Fakfak has 1.5 kilometres of white sand beaches, located approxiamately half an hour from the town. Nearby there are also rock paintings. There are two major religions prevalent: Islam is 60% and christianity 40%. The dominant livelihood as fisherman. That is welknown for its nutmeg tree fruits.

Kaimana Regency:
Population is 26.703 people.

Manokwari Regency:
Population is 209.308 people. The tribes are: Kuri, Simuri, Irarutu, Sebyar, Mascona, Mairasi, Kambouw, Onim, Sekar, Maibrat, Tohit, Imeko, Moi, Tipin, Maya, and Biak. Manokwari is a regency in the bird's head region of West Papua province of Indonesia. The rainforest (Arfak mountains) of Manokwari it is the wealth of its bio-diversity. There are hundreds of species of birds, other animals, flowers, and green plants in the jungles of Manokwari. Manokwari regency has a lot of interesting places, like: there are two big lakes in Anggi. They are called Man Lake and Woman Lake; Mokwam Mountain for butterflies observe; Arfak Mountain to observe the magnificient bird of paradise, western parotia, superb bird of paradise.

Maybrat Regency (Kumurkek)
One of the natural beauties in this location is Framu Lake. Framu Lake is a small part of the Ayamaru Lake, which is located in the Maybrat West Papua Province. At the map is fitting on head Bird of Papua.

Four Kings Regency (Waisai):
Population is 27.071 people. Located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula. The name of Four Kings comes from local mythology that tells about a woman who finds seven eggs. Four of the seven eggs hatch and become kings that occupy four of four kings biggest islands whilst the other three become a ghost, a woman and a stone. History shows that Four Kings was once a part of Tidore Kingdom from Maluku. The main occupation for people arround this area is fishing since the area is dominated by the sea. Their religion is dominantly Christian. The oceanic natural resource around Four Kings makes it significantly potensial as a touristic area. Many sources place Four Kings as one of their top ten popular places for diving whilst it becomes number one in terms of underwater biodiversity. Marine surveys suggest that the marine life diversity in the Four Kings area is the highest recorded on earth. The Coral Triangle is the hearth of the world’s coral reef biodiversity, making Four Kings quite possibly the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world. The active tourism, consist of: Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia; Saundarek Village for snorkeling, feeding fish near the jetty and make photograph; Agusta Island for make photograph, swimming and snorkeling; Sawingrai Village for snorkeling and feed fish around the jetty. Also, to observe the red lesser birds of paradise and Wilson birds of paradise; Wayag Island for climb up the hill of Wayag hill stones making photography from the top; Kawe and Fam Island for snorkeling, swim and photography; Mios Manggara for snorkeling; Kri Resort the best Papua diving resort in Four King and to make photography; Batanta for trekking to the jungle to observe the red lesser birds of paradise; Kasim Village at Salawati Island for trekking to the jungle for birding the common and endemic birds.

Sorong Regency (Aimas):
Population is 90.933 people.

South Sorong Regency (Teminabuan):
Population is 48.750 people.

Tambrauw Regency (Fef):
Population is 29.119 people.

Bintuni Bay Regency:
Population is 52.403 people.

Wondama Bay Regency (Rasiei):
Population is 22.731 people.

Sorong City:
Population is 184.239 people. Location of the town in the Bird’s Head Peninsula. The active tourism, consist of: Makbon Road to observe some birds; Sorong Rainforest to observe the common and endemic birds.

Papua Province

The country is Indonesia and the capital is Jayapura. The population is 2.900.000 people in cencus in 2010 and they live primarily by hunting, fishing and gardening in the lowlands. The population of Papua Province has been growing fast, from 1.9 million in the 2000 to 2.9 million in the 2010 cencus. Religions in Papua Province, consist of: Protestant is 51.2%, Roman Catholic is 25.42%, Islam is 23% and others 2.5%. It’s divided into 28 regencies, 1 city, 117 subdistricts, 66 political district administered by village chief and 830 villages, there are:

Asmat Regency:
The capital of the regency is Agats. The population is 70.000 estimation. Their etnic group is Asmat. The traditional house of Papua is the Honai, a rounded house made of a wood and grass roof covering. Several different regional instruments have been popularized to include the Atowo, Tifa and the Fu. Several of the regencies you can still find traditional garb. A Koteka is a hollowed out gourd used by tribesmen to cover their genitals. Religion in Asmat, consist of: Indigenous beliefs and Christianity. Possessing one of the most well-known and vibrant woodcarving traditions, is designed to honour ancestors, their art is sought by collectors worldwide. Their way of life are heavily dependent on the rich natural resources found in their forests, rivers and seas. The Asmat mainly subsist on starch from the sago palm, fish, forest game and other items gathered from their forests and waters. Materials for canoes, dwellings and woodcarvings are also all gathered locally. Asmat have lived in tree houses, sometimes as high as 25 meters from the ground. Asmat have traditionally placed great emphasis on the veneration of ancestors particularly those who were accomplished warriors. Traditionally, many Asmat men practiced polygyny by marrying more than one woman. They had long-term ritual sexual/friendship relationship (Mbai), where male partners were also known to share their wives in a practice called papitsj.

Biak Numfor Regency:
The active tourism industry, consist of: Turtles Nest on Wafor Beach is located on Supiori Island. This flat, Pacific Ocean white sand beach is 2 km in length. During the Mei – July nesting season, large numbers of marine turtles visit the beach. The turtle species found in the area are the olive ridley, hawksbill, green turtle and leatherback; Japanese Cave; Bosnik Beach; Onodera Shambasi; Old Hospital; Sorido Air Strip and Paray World War II monument and Mokmer village; Wari Beach; Warsa Waterfall; Warafri Jungle with coach experience for birding; Miosindi Island for watching the group of birds flying; Aikakopa, trekking the jungle and watching the lesser birds of paradise.

Boven Digoel Regency:
Capital of the regency is Red Land. Total population is 43.840 people in 2005.

Deiyai Regency:

Population is 51.805 people.

Jayapura Regency:
The active tourism, consist of: Ifar Mountain in Sentani, it was Japanese Base Camp during World War II. Now, the Indonesian Government built as a American Monument, called Mc. Arthur Monument; Doyo Airport in Sentani area, this airfield used by Japanese Soldier for landing their plane during World War II; Visit Assey Village to meet local people and explore some of Japanese remains which can be seen near local houses; Lake Sentani is surrounded by beautiful hills, a perfect place for fishing, swimming, canoeing, skiing and other kinds of water sports. Lake Sentani Festifal has been held in the Kalkhote tourist resort every  June 19th - 23th.

Jayawijaya Regency:
The capital town is Wamena. The population is 300.000 people. Dani tribesman population in the Baliem Valley is 10.000 people. But the original name of this tribe is Hubula. The traditional house of Papua is the Honai, a rounded house made of a wood and grass roof covering. The active tourism, consist of: The famous Baliem Valley, home of the Dani people is a tableland 1.600 m above sea level in the midst of the central mountain range; Kombay Tribe: They live in the basin of the Brazza River. The Kombai have become prominent to the outside world, primarily because of their traditional tree house dwellings, which often reach heights of over 20 meters. It is because mosquitoes and age-old rivalry forced them. Also, its defend in times of war with neighboring tribes or headhunting tribes which used to terrorize Kombai lands. For food, the Kombai hunt pigs and other forest animals, fish, eat the larvae of beetles, plants and eat sago from sago palms. The Kombai cook meat by heating stones under a fire, wrapping the meat in large leaves and placing the hot stones on top, until the meat is cooked. The Kombai also make a cigars out of bamboo. Kombai has parties, in which they invite people of other tribes, often to repay the other tribes for parties they held, or to clear their names after a suangi attack on another family or tribe. In these parties the Kombai would feed their guest sago and grubs from the sago tree, which are delicacy to the Kombai. The leader of the family will hang brush from the ceiling of where the party was housed and if the party was a success, the other tribesmen burn the brush; Koroway Tribe in Yaniruma: Also called the Kalufo. They live in the basin of the Brazza River. They live in the tree houses. The population is 3.000 people. They are one of the few Papuan tribes who do not wear kotekas. The men have their penises “pushed” into the scrotum and on the skin which sticks out, they tightly tied a green leaf. Korowai Stone use nutshells instead or leaves. The women wear short skirts made of sago palm phloem, which is also their main food. The language belongs to the Awyu-Dumut family and live in tree houses on their isolated territory. Their food is sago. The Korowai are hunter gatherers and horticulturalists who practice shifting cultivation and also fishing. Marriage is exogamous and polygynous. Religion reverence is paid especially to the ancestors. The Korowai have an extraordinary and rich oral tradition, like: Myths, folktales, (Magical) sayings, charms and totem traditions. With respect to death and afterlife the Korowai believe in the exsistence of a recipcrocal type of reincarnation: Those who died can be sent back at anytime to the land of the living by the their kinsmen in the land of the dead, in order to reincarnate in a newly born infant of their own clan; Lorentz National Park about 2.35 million ha, it is delegation of variety life of ecosystem in south-east asia; Napua Hill with it’s panoramic view of the valey; Wesaput Village with traditional hanging bridge; Trikora Mount and Habema Lake for trek to remote jungle or just stay around the lake for birding; Jiwika to see the old mummy of Mabel’s family at Sumpaima Village.

Keerom Regency:
The capital city is Waris. Population is 46.282 people.

Yapen Islands Regency:

Population is 89.332 people.                   

Great Mamberamo Regency:
Population is 20.340 people. The largest river is Mamberamo, sometimes called the Amazon of Papua. The ethnic group called Bauzi. The population is 1.500 people living in lower Mamberamo. While the Bauzi people were historically a fierce animistic people group, they are now 65% Christian.

Central Mamberamo Regency:

The capital city is Kepi.

Merauke Regency:
The capital city is Merauke. Population is 173.943 people. The active tourism, consist of: Merauke was the site of an Allied air base during World War II and there was ground fighting between Australian and Japanese patrols. Also, Klemen L is the last Dutch fortress in the East Indies Merauke, Dutch New Guinea, 1942; Wasur National Park, a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Wildlife as kanggoros, birds, eramus of ant to observe or photography.

Mimika Regency:
The capital is Timika. Their ethnic groups, consist of: Amungme: Population is 13.000 people living in the highlands in Timika. Their language is called Damal. They practice shifting agriculture, supplementing their livelihood by hunting and gathering; Kamoro: They are lovers, not fighters. Population is 18.000 people. Visit Kamoro Festival every year on September 29th – Oktober 2nd, locally known as Kamoro Kakuru. It is to preserve the cultural heritage of the Kamoro. Also, serves as a forum to generate income for carvers and the women who weave grass to make bags. Their favorite food are: koo, sago grub and tambelo.

Nabire Regency:
Population is 175.798 people.

Nduga Regency:
Population is 18.806 people.  

Paniai Regency:
The capital city is Enarotali.

Star Mountain Regency:

Peak Regency:

Victory Peak Regency:
The capital is Mulia. Victory peak a mountain peak is the highest mountain in Indonesia. We need ten hours to drive from Wamena to the mostly undeveloped regency. Sometimes known by its former Dutch name Carstensz Pyramid is a mist covered limestone mountain peak 4.884 m above sea level. It is the highest peak of Oceania.

Sarmi Regency:
Sarmi name was derived from the first letter of five origin tribes this land. Namely: Sobey, Armati, Rumboway, Manirem and Isirawa. Kind of tourism potential of Sarmi: Wonderful white sand beach, various reef corals and sea biota of Kumamba Islands (Liki Island, Empty Island and Armo Island). Wakde Island, Yamna Island and Podena Island which are not developed yet but have been showing up their beauty and attraction; Culture and art values from the five major tribes, such as: original ethnic bark clothes, they welcoming us with sing a song and play a traditional wooden drums and the used sites and remnants of Pacific war widely spread in Sarmi, such as Yamagata Monument, Japanese defense cave at Stone Cape, the Allies airstrip in Wakde Island offer a complexities attraction of Sarmi to be developed as tourist destination; A conservation forest Tmun and Syenai mountain 25 km west side of Beneraf village with plenty of highland flora such as Aqualaria Malassensis Tree grow sporadic in this area. On  the same area there’s a cave inhabited by thousand of bats and swallow birds and you can also will see huge stalakmit and stalaktit which are convinced by local people that they were human. And also you will find cool and clear waterfall on the way to this cave; Foja Mountains with new species of birds, butterflies, amphibians, plants and possibly the largest-flowered species of rhododendron.

Supiori Regency:
Population is 12.660 people.

Tolikara Regency:
Town of Tolikara is Karubaga.

Waropen Regency:
The capital is Serui. Population is 87.797 people.

Yahukimo Regency:
Capital city is Sumohai.

Yalimo Regency:
The ethnic group called Yali. Population is 34.057 people. They live to the east of the Baliem Valley in the Papuan highlands. Their major towns are: Angguruk and Kosarek. Their territory is known collectively as Yalimo.

Jayapura City:
Jayapura founded on March 7th, 1910 as Hollandia is the capital, then the city has been changed to New City, then to Sukarnopura and now is Jayapura. Population is 350.000 people. The airport is located 35 km from Jayapura City. It is near Sentani Lake. The active tourism, consist of: Genyem for Japanese Monument during World War II and do ceremony; Dok 9 to see and remains of Japanese apartment; Abepantai for Japanese Monument and do ceremony; Nimbokrang for birding trip. You will see kind of paradise, as twelve wire antena, king bird, yellow lesser bop, horn bill, victoria crown pigeon, cockatoos, etc; Cheerful Cape Beach at Hamadi. It was Allied invasion during World War II; Tablanusu Beach, Bukisi Beach and Amay Beach (Located 65 km west from Jayapura).
